Victory! Ohio just went solar. On May 1, 2008, Governor Strickland signed SB 221 (pdf) into law, setting a 12.5% renewable energy standard for the state--including a solar-specific requirement worth about 594 MW of solar. In a state that's currently 87% coal, this is a significant victory, and we congratulate Environment Ohio and the thousands of activists that worked long and hard on this win. Vote Solar's members can take some credit, too--it was your activism that helped get solar included in the Governor's plan to begin with, and if you contributed money, then you helped pay for this ad (pdf) that ran in the Columbus Dispatch and Dayton Dailey News.
The state now has a renewable portfolio standard with a 0.5% solar carve-out, and good net metering laws.
Now, the effort moves to implementation before the Public Utilities Commission. Stay tuned.
